ENABLE DREAMS TO TAKE FLIGHT: TCAPS 17TH COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

The Children’s Ark Preparatory School marked another period of successful achievement as it held the 17th Commencement Exercises.

The event — graced by guest speaker Ms. Ellen Rojo Galo — was held at the Don Antonio Clubhouse last April 1, 2017. A momentous occasion in the lives of our young students and a time to recognize the outstanding work of our staff as well as the parents.

The Children’s Ark Preparatory School upholds strong emphasis on being part of our community here in Don Antonio Heights. We believe a sense of community is very important to the future of our nation and our children.

This year’s theme “Enable Dreams To Take Flight” centers on the importance of encouraging children to dream and thrive on discovering; to interpret their goals as to their dreams.

We are confident our young graduates are very well-equipped to take on the next part of their educational lives. They have strong foundations and we feel very assured that they have learned many priceless lessons and that we have given them a great start in life.

To the graduates, we say: take on challenges, be God-loving, go for more learning, serve the community, laugh and be all that you can be.

STAR AND JUNIOR GIRL SCOUTS INVESTITURE

December 11 last year marked a special event for the Children’s Ark Preparatory School Star and Junior Girl Scouts. The Investiture commemorated the accomplishments of our Girl Scouts such as bridging to another level, earning awards, and receiving Girl Scout pin.

The program commenced with a moment of prayer to the Most Almighty with a doxology. Followed by the Entrance of Colors, the National Anthem, a welcome address and the recital of the Scout Oath — the code by which all the Scouts of the world live by.

The ceremonial Clothing of Neckerchief and pinning of Investiture pins was initiated with the help of parents and sponsors. The ultimate ritual which identifies the young ones as a member of the scouting movement; a person of character ready to serve others; the symbol of purpose and preparedness; and the strong reminder for these scouts to live in accordance with the ideals.

The ceremony — held at the Don Antonio Heights clubhouse — was graced by Ms. Maria Luz P. Buclatan, Girl Scout District Coordinator, Commonwealth Elementary School teacher and a renowned Yolanda survivor.

Ms. Buclatan presented the Girls with their recognitions for their deeds during the year.

SCOUT INVESTITURE CEREMONY: BEGINNING OF A PURPOSEFUL SCOUTING

On November 17, the Children’s Ark Preparatory School held the Kab Scout and Boy Scout Investiture Ceremony at the DAHHA Covered Court in Quezon City. The swearing-in was attended by guests which include Senior Scouts Nick Bolima and Erwin Wenceslao and the Scouts’ Ninongs and Ninangs.

The investiture ceremony is that moment when the Scouts, thru the Scout Promise, annunciates their pledge and loyalty to the Scout Law. At the ceremony, the Scout makes the Promise to the Scouts and Scouters of their troop and to all the Scouts of the world. After which, they are now to be called Scouts.

The investiture is the onset of that time when young people starts to discover the world and forge their own self-hood by which Scouting is so purposely inclined.

The ceremony was followed by a Day Camp at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center where the traditional campfire and candle-lighting rites are held for this special setting.

The value of Scouting is that it focuses on ethics and values; service to the community; and development of practical and leadership skills of young people. It’s also about cooperation and skill development. And fun too!

For so many years, Scouting has lived through the changes of society. In this age of digitization when young people are so hooked up on technologies, Scouting continues to be the proponent of outdoor interests. Bob Confer on The Significance of Scouting says it all:

The Scouting program is just as important now as it was nearly a century ago. It could even be argued that it might have greater significance today. It’s the perfect outlet for today’s youth and it can help them overcome some of the obstacles in their paths. There’s a lot missing in their lives: Their outdoor pursuits have taken a back seat to new-fangled electronics, they don’t share the same bond with their real-world communities that they do with their trivial Internet communities, their schools have totally lost sight of civic education, and they struggle to find continuity in broken homes which, sadly, have become the norm.

Camping will always be part of Scouting. It is both an enjoyable and a learning experience rolled into one. Here, our Scouts are also learning other important life essentials such as proper hygiene, self discipline and responsibility.

TCAPS_18

With camping, comes the candle-lighting and the campfire. Our Scouts have enjoyed the camaraderie and the fun of being able to create a good fire.

In the Philippines today, not as many boys are interested in Scouting and fewer parents are enrolling their kids to the program. The decline may be attributed to the changing times when there are more options for kids and busier schedules for both children and their parents. Even so, The Children’s Ark Preparatory School places a very high value on Scouting as a tool for community involvement.

EARTHQUAKE DRILL: T.C.A.P.S ON CHILDREN’S DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Manila is No. 5 on Forbes’ list of 20 Most Earthquake Vulnerable Cities. This is because the Philippines lies on the edge of the Pacific plate or, inside the Pacific “Ring of Fire” — a seismic zone where a large number of earthquakes occur. Since the 17th century, the Philippines has experienced over a hundred deadly earthquakes. The latest being the Central Visayas tremor with a magnitude of 7.2 which hit on October 2013.

In a country prone to these hazards, the government has a continued policy stressing the importance of preparedness when a disaster strikes. In the same manner, the Children’s Ark Preparatory School understands the need for readiness and the unique challenges earthquakes pose on its schoolchildren. Not like other natural calamities, earthquakes occur without warning. However, with the right training and careful planning, everyone can be prepared to react appropriately during and after an earthquake, and with ample provisions ready for use.

11000621_999584536760329_2289719960053493137_o

TCAPS stresses the importance of drills and practices and how it can reduce alarm and confusion when disaster strikes. The more kids are educated on preparedness the more they are less likely to panic. Doing the wrong thing during crisis is a terrible mistake.

Most earthquake-prone countries require several drills a year. Last July, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority conducted the Metrowide Quake Drill with the aim of providing a “real-world training scenario in preparation for a possible earthquake in Metro Manila.” This required performance of the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drills and evacuation of premises.

Our teachers didn’t have a hard time conducting this SHAKE DRILL as our kids show great enthusiasm for the exercise.

The July 1990 earthquake is probably the most destructive and the most tragic disaster in the history of the Philippines. A great number of schoolchildren perished in this earthquake particularly those in Central Luzon. It occurred just when classes were only moments away from being over.

The Children’s Ark Preparatory School underscores preparedness among our kids with utmost concern, and makes it a point to prioritize readiness as to natural calamities especially earthquakes. We hope for the best and expect the worst, but the bottom line is we cannot be unprepared when bad things strikes.

COSPLAY FOR A CAUSE

A date with movie/comics “characters” as The Children’s Ark Preparatory School held Cosplay For A Cause, a gala of our little cosplayers assembled for the benefit of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society and the Social Development Center (SDC).

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a volunteer-based non-government organization whose goal is to prevent animal cruelty through education, animal sheltering and advocacy. The SDC on the other hand aims at protecting, rehabilitating and training the children, while facilitating their social preparation for future family reunification and community integration.

The SDC, however, is currently suffering from a critical lack of resources, mostly financial and technical. This public institution receives insufficient support to operate full services and meet the basic needs of the children.

Much as cosplay provided the kids a whole lot of fun in playing dress-up with cool characters, our pack of awesome cosplayers have joined together in extending a helping hand and more for the two institutions.

NUTRITION MONTH 2014: Kalamidad Paghandaan, Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan

Based on the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FRNI) survey of 2011, malnutrition among Filipino kids is still widespread. It showed that two out of 10 children from 0 to 47 months old were born with low birth weight. The research verified that geographic location is a factor affecting children’s health. In the Philippines, the most number of malnourished children are those from Visayas and Mindanao.

The barangays — being the smallest unit of government –would do well in setting nutrition as a priority in their annual budget and by taking actions to create a well-informed citizenry.

For this reason, we have the National Nutrition Month which aims to disseminate nutrition related messages to all Filipinos. This year’s theme titled “Kalamidad Paghandaan, Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan,” is intent in promoting the following:

  • Interventions to address nutritional needs in emergencies and disasters
  • Mobilize responders particularly the local nutrition clusters and stakeholders
  • Increase awareness among families and individuals on coping and resiliency strategies

The Children’s Ark Preparatory School is committed in bolstering children’s knowledge and awareness of food and nutrition. This year, the school observed Nutrition Month with yet another fun-filled festivity.
